Desktop
Sharing
Desktop
sharing refers to any technology or product that can allow
multiple users to share the same desktop even if the
other users are using different computers. This remote
collaboration can be made possible through the use of a
graphical terminal emulator.
Desktop
sharing basically allows users to do two activities
remotely. The first activity is to allow a user to log in to a
local computer even if he is in another city or country. Remote
login allows any user to access his work computers from any
device that can access the internet. Previously, the only way
to access files remotely from the home is through the use of
virtual private networks (VPN). This VPN can access files
through the use of the Local Area Network (LAN) connection at
your office. However, the VPN is only limited to accessing
files that have been saved on the network. Files that are saved
in hard drives were not accessible until the recent
developments of remote desktop sharing
applications.
Another
activity that is allowed by desktop sharing is real-time
collaboration. This application is a more complex area of
desktop sharing because it uses other components of multimedia
communications. Real-time collaboration also uses LAN
connections in combination with multimedia technology to create
a virtual space where different users located in remote areas
can meet, socialize, exchange files and work
together.
Used
effectively, desktop sharing can become an important and
valuable tool for business.
